User Guide for the Random Lucky Wheel Editor Panel
Discover how to use Ruletaa’s advanced Editor Panel to customize your lucky spinning wheel with precision, powered by a low information entropy design.
Welcome to the comprehensive guide to the Editor Panel in Ruletaa. This article will walk you through the key features and use cases of the editor interface, helping you unlock the full potential of Ruletaa’s advanced customization tools. At the end of the article, we’ll also explore the core design philosophy behind the editor — the principle of low information entropy.
Currently, the Editor Panel consists of three main tabbed sections:
- Options Panel
- Results Panel
- Visibility Toggle Panel
Options Panel: Customize Your Wheel Items
The Options Panel is where you define the items on your spinning wheel. It offers two distinct modes:
- Basic Mode
- Advanced Mode
Both modes include the following sorting tools to help you organize your entries easily:
- Random Sort
- Ascending Sort
- Descending Sort
These sorting tools are algorithmically based on the text content of each option, allowing for quick reordering. For example, when creating a wheel of names, you can alphabetize the list for easier navigation.
Additionally, a real-time counter displays the total number of options on the wheel, helping you verify the item count regardless of how you edit the list.
Basic Mode
Basic Mode is designed for quick and straightforward input. You can enter one option per line with no hard limit, although we recommend maintaining a reasonable number to ensure optimal visual balance and performance.
In some specialized wheels like the Number Randomizer and Yes/No Spinner, we’ve introduced custom shortcut buttons to streamline the input process and improve user efficiency.
Advanced Mode
Advanced Mode gives you full control over each wheel item. In addition to the basic text input field, you’ll find:
- A weight input to control the probability of each item being selected
- A background color selector for visual customization
- Show/Hide toggles to include or exclude options without deleting them
- A visual representation of item weight for intuitive feedback
The weight input lets you fine-tune the likelihood of each item appearing as the result. Changes are visually reflected in a dynamic percentage bar, giving you a clear understanding of distribution.
The background color selector is a powerful tool for branding or personalization. Whether you’re creating a Color Spinner or designing a theme-specific wheel, the built-in color picker helps you match your desired aesthetic effortlessly.
You can also temporarily hide options without removing them using the Show/Hide toggle — a handy feature when you want to exclude certain items from a spin without losing your setup.
Results Panel: Track Every Spin Outcome
The Results Panel logs the outcome of every spin, including:
- Spin index
- Final result
- A delete button for clearing individual entries
We believe that every spin matters. Detailed record-keeping ensures transparency and allows users to review or report outcomes as needed.
Visibility Toggle Panel: Focus on What Matters
Once your setup is complete, the Visibility Toggle Panel button allows you to collapse the editor interface. This expands the wheel display area, creating a cleaner layout — especially useful when presenting or sharing your screen with an audience. It helps direct attention to the spinning action and results, enhancing the immersive experience.
Core Design Philosophy: Low Information Entropy
As mentioned at the beginning, the concept of low information entropy is central to our editor’s design.
The spinning wheel itself is inherently high in information entropy — it generates unpredictable, random outcomes. While randomness is key to its function, the human brain naturally seeks patterns and clarity. When faced with chaotic or complex interfaces, users may experience:
- Cognitive overload
- Decision fatigue
- Increased anxiety or stress
Ruletaa’s mission is to help users make efficient decisions, not add to their mental load. That’s why our editor is designed to minimize cognitive friction, even when multiple wheels (up to 10 per page) are in use.
Inspired by the article How to Focus Easily in a World of Distractions: 6 Techniques, we’ve incorporated several focus-enhancing strategies:
- Minimize distractions and define clear goals
- Break tasks into manageable steps
- Enable deep work through interface clarity
To support this, we’ve implemented three key design choices:
- Clear Iconography – Intuitive icons help users quickly understand each function
- Functional Segmentation – Tabs group related features together, reducing clutter and allowing users to focus on one task at a time
- Manual Show/Hide Controls – Users can hide the editor to concentrate fully on the spinning wheel
